Filipinos Jeff de Luna and Roberto Gomez fail to replicate their stunning comeback in the previous round as Estonia advances to the semifinals of the 2021 World Cup of Pool

Filipino cue artists Jeff de Luna and Roberto Gomez saw their run in the 2021 World Cup of Pool come to a screeching halt after they crashed out in the quarterfinals against Estonia.

De Luna and Gomez failed to replicate their stunning comeback against USA in the previous round as Estonians Denis Grabe and Mark Magi cruised to a 9-4 win at the Stadium MK in England on Friday, May 14.

The Filipino duo reached the quarterfinals in astonishing fashion after overcoming a 0-5 deficit against Americans Billy Thorpe and Skyler Woodward in the second round.

But Grabe and Magi proved to be a steadier pair in the endgame as they built a comfortable 6-1 lead in the race-to-nine duel en route to the win.

The Philippines still had a chance to stay alive when Magi bungled a corner shot for the ninth ball in the 13th and final game.

However, Gomez missed his potential match-extending shot as the ninth ball hit the lip of the corner pocket.

Grabe then wrapped up the victory for Estonia, which will tangle with Germany in the semifinals.

The other semifinal pairing will pit Slovakia against Great Britain C.

Despite the loss, De Luna and Gomez ended their campaign richer as they share the $9,000 prize money for quarterfinalists. – Rappler.com
