MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine delegation received a warm reception at the opening ceremony of the 28th Southeast Asian Games at the Singapore Sports Hub on Friday, June 5.
Led by volleyball standout Alyssa Valdez as flag-bearer, the Philippines boasts 459 athletes as it seeks to surpass its 7th place finish in 2013, when they won just 101 medals in Myanmar. The Philippines is competing in 35 out of the 36 sports this year, with the lone exception being field hockey.
The Philippines has already captured 3 silvers and a bronze ahead of the official opening ceremony.
The Philippine delegation had much to smile about after word that Brunei had withdrawn from hosting the 2019 SEA Games citing a lack of time to prepare.
The Philippines last hosted the regional Olympic-style Games in 2005.
