Global opens President's Cup with a bang
MANILA, Philippines -- Reigning United Football League (UFL) champion Global FC started their debut campaign in the AFC President's Cup sizzling with a resounding 5-0 win against Bhutanese side Yeedzin on Wednesday, May 8.
The squad, teeming with national team stalwarts, only needed 20 minutes to shut the door against the visiting side, scoring 4 goals and hurling themselves to the top of Group B.
Azkals Patrick Reichelt, Carli De Murga and Misagh Bahadoran along with Polish-English booter Ben Starosta scored the first 4 goals to stack up Global's lead early in the match.
Reichelt opened the scoring with a 5th minute composed finish from a Jeffrey Christiaes' superb freekick, beating Yeedzin's goalkeeper Tshering Dendup in the challenge.
De Murga, the Azkals formidable rightback, added to Global's tally in the 9th minute, after converting Bahadoran's throughball from a run of play.
Starosta then joined the fray, pouncing on the ball after the Yeedzin goalkeeper spilled a save and striking it home to lift Global to a 3-0 lead.
Bahadoran put his name in the scoresheet as well, 4 minutes after Starosta's smart goal, netting a long-range strike that caught Dendup flat-footed.
A 65th minute goal from Azkals midfielder Marwin Angeles sealed the deal for the defending league champion, giving the squad a huge boost coming in their upcoming games.
Global FC will face Pakistan's Khan Research Laboratorieson Friday, May 10, before capping their group stage campaign against powerhouse Dordoi Bishkek of Kyrgyzstan on Sunday, May 12. - Rappler.com
