One fan broke up with his girlfriend to be able to line up for tickets to the LeBron James event. Did he get one?

MANILA, Philippines — Unstoppable.

Rain or shine, loyal Filipino fans of Miami Heat superstar LeBron James defied the odds just to be able to witness history on Tuesday, July 23.

People of different ages flocked to the Nike Park at Bonifacio Global City from Monday, July 15, to Wednesday, July 17, with fingers crossed, hoping they could be one of the lucky fans to grab a ticket and seize a chance to be part of the first visit of the NBA’s biggest star to the Philippines.

College student Sean Tiongco endured the 8-hour wait and was fortunately among the first people to receive tickets along with his school mates.

“We started waiting at 3:00pm yesterday (July 16),” said a visibly elated Tiongco. “They gave us the claim stub at around 11:00pm and asked us to be here at 12:00pm today for the releasing of tickets.”

Tiongco also shared he would never regret missing one day of school for something as priceless as this.

“Nothing will compare to seeing my idol,” he added. “It is worth it.”

Double the pain

Unfortunately, not everyone had a happy ending.

Dan Cabral and his friends have been waiting in line for almost 17 hours straight, bringing tents for an overnight stay while eating meals as they sat on the line.

“We weren’t given any stubs,” the 26-year-old told Rappler. “But we stayed. We wanted to take the risk.”

Fate, though, did not smile on them as they went home without tickets.

For Mark Cablayan, it was double the pain. He broke up with his girlfriend because she refused the idea of staying overnight to line up for tickets to the LeBron event. She thought it was ridiculous but Cablayan, who was with Cabral, was persistent.

“It’s okay,” he said. “At least I tried.”

Loyal still

Even if they won’t be able to see James, Cablayan and Cabral said they would still be loyal fans, hoping that the 4-time NBA MVP would return and visit the country again soon.

Thousands of people flocked to the Nike Park at the Fort, each with the goal of securing tickets to an event featuring the maiden trip of the world’s best basketball player to the Philippines. For them, the hours of waiting won’t compare to the excitement of seeing their idol in the flesh.

Now, the wait is over. The King is coming to town. – Rappler.com
