MANILA, Philippines – Coming back in the payoff period after being down for three quarters, the Petron Blaze Boosters nipped the Barako Bull Energy Cola, 96-90, in the PLDT myDSL Philippine Cup on Wednesday, December 4 at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Barako Bull set the tempo of the game early as they raced to a quick 6-0 start. From that point up until the third canto, Barako had been successful in stopping Petron’s every attempt at building momentum. Barako’s good ball movement along with proper spreading of the floor allowed them to post a 13-point lead early in the second period, 40-27.

But Petron would not go away easily as they chipped away slowly at Barako Bull’s lead. Two freebies by Chico Lanete evened the score at 73 all early in the final period. He then scored on a jumper in the ensuing play to give Petron the lead for the first time.

Petron seemed to have finally woken up from their sleep and led by 83-76 on a Paolo Hubalde basket with 4:49 left. Hubalde finished with 15 points.

As the clock ticked away, Barako’s defense crumbled amid the pressure and their ball movement was suddenly nowhere to be found. Petron held Barako Bull to just two points for the first half of the final quarter.

Willie Miller tried to take over for Barako in crunch time but Hubalde, Arwind Santos, and Marcio Lassiter scored crucial baskets to seal the win and remain undefeated. Barako Bull, meanwhile, dropped to 2-2.

Lassiter led the scoring for Petron with 26 points to go with 8 boards and 4 assists. While June Mar Fajardo controlled the boards once again with 22 rebounds. – with reports from Jane Bracher/Rappler.com
