MANILA, Philippines – Pam Lastimosa starred for the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses as they whipped the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons, 25-23, 25-20, 25-15, in the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament, Sunday, January 26, at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Diliman crew had no answer to Lastimosa’s fury as she finished with 18 markers off 12 attacks and 4 blocks to lead UST to its fourth win this season, less than a week after falling to National University in their last outing.

UST had to buck a lethargic start as the Lady Maroons zoomed to a 4-1 lead early on but the Tigresses finally got their groove going as they caught up with UP at 8-8 and did just enough to pry the opening set by two, 25-23.

The Tigresses were clumsy all-game long as they piled up 22 errors, which the Maroons exploited in the second set, but Carmela Tunay emerged on the right stretches for UST to thwart UP’s efforts and take a two-set lead, 25-20.

The Espana-based side – playing catch-up for a Final Four slot – then sealed the deal in the third, boosted by Jem Gutierrez and Lastimosa who were brilliant until the final frame right from the get-go.

Despite committing a mountain of errors, UST’s attacking overshadowed their lapses as they converted 43 points off attacks compared to UP’s 26.

Backing Lastimosa up in scoring is Gutierrez, who finished with 11 points, while Tunay and Marivic Meneses each had 9 for UST.

The Maroons, who fell to 1-9, were spearheaded by Kat Bersola and Angeli Araneta who registered 9 and 8 markers, respectively.

UP will next face league-leading De La Salle University next Saturday, February 1, while the Tigresses will have a one-week break before returning to action against Far Eastern University on Sunday, February 2. – Rappler.com
