‘It’s always an honor to share the cage with legends, and it gives an added motivation for me,’ says Philippine MMA icon Eduard Folayang

Eduard “Landslide” Folayang is an icon in Philippine mixed martial arts, having towed the sport to great heights ever since turning pro in 2007.

Now he gets the chance to ply his trade against another legend in Yoshihiro “Sexyama” Akiyama when they clash at ONE on TNT IV on April 28, an event that airs live on US primetime.

The former ONE lightweight world champion expressed his excitement in facing Akiyama, who has made a name for himself as a multi-awarded judo practitioner and entertaining staple in Asian mixed martial arts.

Last time out, Folayang got outpointed by Antonio “The Spartan” Caruso. Now he gets a chance to bounce back against a big name like Akiyama.

“This is a very important battle for me. I didn’t get the results and the performance that I wanted to give in my previous fights, so this time I will aim steadfast on this one,” he said.

“It’s always an honor to share the cage with legends, and it gives an added motivation for me.”

While Folayang is reeling off a loss, Akiyama is fresh off a confidence-boosting win. He knocked out Sherif “The Shark” Mohamed at ONE: King of the Jungle, and he plans to finish “Landslide” next.

That – alongside his experience – is the reason why Folayang is working extremely hard for this match.

“I’m preparing well mentally and physically. Our training consists of workouts in the gym and outdoors,” Folayang said.

“Everyone has their own strengths, so it’s all about looking at how to handle [his strengths] well. I think his biggest strength is his experience, having fought the best fighters in their primes.”

Folayang isn’t keen on giving predictions on how a match will go, but he promises that he’ll come in prepared against Akiyama.

“I have respect for athletes who have done great things in the sport and still compete at the highest level,” Folayang said.

“I don’t know [what will happen]. What I know is that preparations will be the biggest factor here.” – Rappler.com
