Caloocan and Negros remained in the lead of their respective divisions after Saturday’s eighth and ninth round of the 2021 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All-Filipino Conference

Both teams have 9 wins without a loss as the first phase of the event nears its wrapup on Wednesday, February 3.

Caloocan, led by International Masters Paulo Bersamina and Jan Emmanuel Garcia, routed Olongapo, 16-6, and waylaid Cagayan, 17.5-3.5, in the Northern Conference.

San Juan trails with 8 wins and 1 loss, followed by Manila and Laguna, which relied on national champion Rogelio Barcenilla’s victory in rapid chess to overcome Isabela, 11-10.

Manila and Laguna have 7 wins and 2 losses.

In the Southern Conference, trailing Negros are Camarines and Iloilo, both with 8 wins and 1 loss. Mindoro, led by speed chess king David Elorta and Cordova have 5 wins and 4 losses.

Negros edged Zamboanga, 11.5-9.5, and whipped Surigao, 18-3. Iloilo defeated Camarines, 11.5-9.5, lifted by the victory of Joey Antonio over Mark Paragua in the blitz portion and beat Cordova, 14-7.

Camarines rebounded from losing to Iloilo by defeating Lapu-Lapu City, 11.5-9.5.

Twelve teams, representing cities in the Philippines, are playing in the Northern and Southern Conference.

Each player competes in rapid or blitz chess every match. A win in rapid chess is worth 2 points, while victory in blitz chess is 1 point. A draw in rapid chess is one point, while it’s half a point in blitz chess.
