Filipino boxer Genebert Basadre struck gold in the 2005 SEA Games and won bronze in the 2006 Asian Games

Filipino boxer Genebert Basadre, who won a gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games, died on Sunday, April 25.

He was 37.

According to the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP), Basadre collapsed at his home in Cagayan de Oro City last April 19.

Basadre was revived the following day but he eventually fell into a coma and died on Sunday at the Polymedic Plaza Hospital.

“He was so young and was dedicated, soft-spoken, and well-liked. The news is startling to say the least,” said ABAP secretary general Ed Picson.

Basadre struck gold in the 2005 SEA Games hosted by the Philippines as he lorded over the lightweight division.

He then clinched a lightweight bronze medal in the 2006 Asian Games held in Doha, Qatar.

After retiring, Basadre pursued a career in the Philippine Army, but he remained around the sport by coaching in his home city. – Rappler.com
