5 kilos of determination: Pacheco bags gold in shot put
A wrist injury doesn't stop 17-year-old Bryan Pacheco from brining pride and honor to the Philippines in the 6th ASEAN Schools Games

MARIKINA CITY, Philippines – Five kilos of solid iron stood between Bryan Pacheco and his dream to bring pride and honor to his country. With the strength in his arms, the thought of winning in his mind and the Philippines in his heart, he conquered the game and realized his dream.

Hailing from the province of Baler, Aurora, 17-year-old Pacheco of the Far Eastern University (FEU) proved Filipinos are a force to be reckoned with as he bagged the gold medal in the shot put category of athletics in the 6th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) Monday, December 1.

“Proud to be Filipino!” said Pacheco, offering his victory to Filipinos everywhere.

Pacheco clinched the gold medal with a record-breaking 16.67 meters. This is his best distance so far despite playing with a wrist injury.

“Though I had an injury, the thought of bringing home a win for our country made me forget the pain,” he added.

In the 5th ASG in Vietnam in 2013, the young athlete also sealed a 3rd place victory in the shot put category.

“I just gave my courage and strong will in the game,” Pacheco said when asked about his performance.

Pacheco rated his performance a 9.5 out of 10. “I have my own technique but I wasn’t able to use it because my coach taught me a new and effective one. The uncertainty of the new technique working and being uncomfortable with it took the .5 away,” he added.

The 17-year-old is also a UAAP player for FEU in the shot put and javelin division. – Rappler.com
