Malaysia finishes on top as 6th ASEAN Schools Games close
Team Malaysia tops the medal tally with 41 gold medals, 34 silvers, and 30 bronzes

MARIKINA CITY, Philippines – The 6th ASEAN Schools Games officially closed Friday, December 5, with the Philippines bagging 11 gold medals, 14 silvers, and 22 bronzes.

This year’s games were historic for the country. Aside from hosting the games for the first time, the country also won its first ever gold medals since the international event was founded.

Some of the Philippines’ gold medals were won by young athletes in wushu, the sport the country added to the games as this year’s host.

Department of Education undersecretary Rizalino Rivero noted the organizers were amazed by the passion shown by the athletes.

“We are in awe of the dedication and passion being shown by these young athletes. Their passion in sports, drive towards excellence – giving their all to win and valiantly accepted defeat – are really commendable,” he said.

At least 1,500 student athletes competed in 11 sports events from December 1 to 5.

Winners

Topping the medal tally was Team Malaysia with 41 gold medals, 34 silvers, and 30 bronzes.

Thailand came in second with a total of 100 medals, 35 of which were golds.

Far behind the top two was Indonesia with 15 golds, 31 silvers, and 30 bronzes.

Beyond the competition, however, Rizalino said the games brought memorable experiences to the athletes. He cited the story of Karen Janario, a Yolanda survivor who competed – and won two medals – in athletics.

“One of her dreams has come true – to become an international champion in her field. The ASG has provided her with that opportunity,” Rizalino said.

“The story of Karen is the story of every athlete – an athlete who keeps on pushing hard despite limitations and challenges in life. I say again, sports and life teach us things that we can use in our dark times,” he added.

The ceremonies ended with DepEd officially turning over the ASEAN Secondary Schools Council (ASSC) flag to Brunei Darussalam, the host for the 7th ASEAN Schools Games. – Rappler.com
