MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine taekwondo team hauled in a total of 5 bronze medals in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon. But the squad aims to take its campaign to the next level in this year’s edition in Jakarta.

With a lineup of 17 jins, the team targets at least a silver this time.

The taekwondo team since 1986, has always been winning medals and placing in the podium and 4 years ago, we brought home [5] bronze medals in the sparring competition Kyorugi. We’re hoping to break that record,” said Philippine Taekwondo Association secretary general Monsour Del Rosario during the recent URCC awards night.

Kirstie Alora and Samuel Morrison, the only holdovers from the 2014 campaign, expect to improve on their third-place finish.

Alora qualified in the 2016 Rio Olympics after bagging a silver in the Asian qualifier, while Morrison also won a gold in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.

As both jins try to sustain their stellar performances in the Asiad, Del Rosario thinks Kristopher Uy, Francis Aaron Agojo and Pauline Lopez can land on the podium as well.

I think Kris Uy will win; Aaron Agojo, I hope he’ll place; if Pauline’s injury gets healed, I think she’ll do okay,” said Del Rosario.

Lopez, the country’s lone gold medalist in the 2016 Asian Championships, sustained a minor sprain during training, but she confirmed to Rappler that she will be ready to fight.

The taekwondo event will be held from August 19 to 23 at the Jakarta Convention Center Plenary Hall.
