JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Philippines is all set to showcase its sporting talents in the 2018 Asian Games from August 18 to September 2.

With 272 athletes seeing action in Indonesia, the country looks to improve on its 1-3-11 gold-silver-bronze finish in the Incheon edition of the quadrennial meet in 2014.

Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz will be the Philippines’ best bet for a gold medal while BMX rider Daniel Caluag, the country’s lone gold medalist in 2014, will be banked on to defend his throne.

Gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo, who had racked up medals in different world cups  earlier this year, is also a favorite to land on the podium.

The Philippine men’s basketball team is expected to secure a better finish from its 7th-place ranking in 2014 with the inclusion of Filipino-American NBA player Jordan Clarkson.

The Asiad will also see the Philippines field a women’s volleyball team for the first time in 36 years. The country wound up at 5th place in the sport in 1982.

Some of the other big names from the Philippine team are Olympians Kirstie Alora (taekwondo) and Nestor Colonia (weightlifting), Eric Cray and EJ Obiena (athletics) and Toni Leviste (equestrian).
