MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines may be fielding a women’s volleyball team for the first time in 36 years, but the underdog squad led by Alyssa Valdez, Jaja Santiago and team captain Aby Maraño hopes to pull off some surprises in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Nationals open their campaign versus Thailand – the bronze medalist in the 2014 Incheon Games – on Sunday, August 19, before taking on Japan, Hong Kong and host Indonesia in Pool A.
Coach Shaq delos Santos’ wards, who are hoping to flash improved skills after a week-long training in Okagawa, Japan, aim for at least a quarterfinal berth in the quadrennial meet.
Rounding out the 14-man team are Mika Reyes, Kim Fajardo, Denden Lazaro, Kim Kianna Dy, Dawn Macandili, Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Jia Morado, Majoy Baron, Cha Cruz, Maika Ortiz, and Mylene Paat.
