Philippine boxing absorbs another blow in the 2018 Asian Games

MANILA, Philippines –  Philippine boxing absorbed another major blow in the 2018 Asian Games.

Men’s bantamweight bet Mario Fernandez suffered a 3rd-round knockout loss at the hands of Iraq’s Jaafar Al Sudani at the JIExpo-Hall C in Jakarta, Indonesia on Saturday, August 25.

Fernandez was leading the scorecards20-18, 20-18, 19-19, before he got tagged with a right straight in the last 47 seconds that knocked him out cold.

While Fernandez’s loss left no room for doubt, that wasn’t the case on Friday night  as Filipina featherweight Nesthy Petecio lost a 2-3 controversial majority decision against China’s Yin Jun Hua in the match where the Filipina clearly came out as more aggressive.

The judges from Bulgaria and Korea scored all rounds for the Chinese fighter, while judges from Turkmenistan and Japan had it in favor of Petecio.

A fifth judge from France had it tied at 28-28 but ultimately chose Yin to break the deadlock.

The result prompted Alliance of Boxing Associations of the Philippines (ABAP) executive director Ed Picson to call for the ban of the three judges who ruled against Petecio for the rest of the Philippines’ fights in the Asiad.

“There’s really nothing much we can say, we all saw what happened,” he said. “It’s just so sad that at a time when boxing is fighting hard to retain its spot in the Olympics, something like this happens. It’s heartbreaking.”

“Protests are not allowed but I will appeal that the judges responsible for this travesty not be assigned to officiate in the coming Philippine fights as judges or referees,” he continued. “I think that is fair.”

Joel Bacho also lost to Sajjad Kazemzadeh Poshtiri of Iran in men’s welterweight. – Rappler.com
