PH falls victim to Korean curse yet again in Asian Games 2018
The Philippine men’s basketball team absorbs another heartbreak as Korea spoils the country’s semifinal bid in the 2018 Asian Games

JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Philippine men’s basketball team has absorbed many painful losses against Korea in the last three decades.

And Gilas Pilipinas got dealt with another one as the Nationals bowed to South Korea, 91-82, to drop to the consolation round of the 2018 Asian Games basketball competition at the GBK-Basket Hall on Monday, August 27.

Even with Jordan Clarkson at the helm – and a slew of players delivering in key stretches – the Nationals couldn’t pull away in a tight second half before the Koreans found their range and erected a double-digit edge in their do-or-die quarterfinal match.

Clarkson, the Filipino-American NBA player seeing action in just his second game for the country, topscored with 25 points.

Christian Standhardinger added 16 points, while Stanley Pringle scored 14 for the Nationals.

Gilas, who are trying to avoid replicating their worst finish at seventh in the 2014 Incheon Games, will drop to the classification round.

Korea will go up against the winner of the other quarterfinal match between Iran and Japan in the Final Four.

After Korea’s hot start, 14-5, the Nationals staged a blistering run with Clarkson capping it with a midrange jumper that gave the country its first lead, 25-24, at the 6:30 mark of the second quarter.

The combined sharp shooting of Paul Lee, Pringle and Standhardinger propped up Gilas’ lead, 44-38, until defensive lapses allowed Korea to trim the lead to just a basket, 44-42, at the half.

Korea 91 – Ratliffe 30, Kim Sunhyung 17, Heo Ilyoung 17, Lee Seounghyun 11, Jeo Junbeom 9, Heo Ung 6, Lee Junghyun 1, Park Chanhee 0, Choi Junyong 0.
