DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — The Negros Oriental government urged the participants of the 2013 Palarong Pambansa to be their ambassador and spread the stories of how beautiful their province is.

“We were able to move mountains to ensure you will have an unforgettable experience throughout your stay here,” Dumaguete mayor Manuel Sagarbarria told the thousands of athletes, coaches and officials in the opening ceremonies Sunday night, April 21.

“When you go back to your hometowns, make sure you become the ambassadors of our province and tell everyone about your memorable stay here,” Sagabarria added.

Set for some billeting areas and sport venues, the Negros Oriental capital has put in place all their sports facilities and quarters within a 10-kilometer range within Dumaguete.

The city also takes pride in their various attractions here, including the People’s Park, Silliman University, and the boulevard patterned after Manila’s baywalk, as well as its proximity to nature havens like dolphin-watching hotspots and mountain climbing sites in its neighboring towns.

Governor apologizes for diarrhea outbreak

Provincial Governor Roel Degamo, meanwhile, has apologized for the diarrhea outbreak that affected more than 160 delegates from the Eastern Visayas contingent.

“We are sorry for the 160 athletes and officials that were struck with Diarrhea. We don’t intend to dampen the spirit of the games but I assure everyone that the provincial government, with the help of Department of Education, has the situation under control,” Degamo said. “We wish this will not reduce the excitement and competitiveness of the games.

After several failed bids in the past, Negros Oriental has finally won the right to host the Palaro in a voting December last year, just narrowly edging neighbor Negros Occidental by three votes.

“There is so much pride at stake. This has been the long-awaited wish of Oriental Negrenses. We are happy that we finally made it happen,” Degamo quipped. “We take pride in our state of the art facilities and of course our very warm people who welcomes you to “The City of Gentle People.”

Degamo also pushed for the Games to become a gathering to strengthen friendship and camaraderie and promote peace and progress throughout the week-long event. – Rappler.com
