DUMAGUETE CITY, Philippines — In gymnastics, where athleticism and finesse in execution are needed to excel, John Paul Cabido does both despite his deformity.

The 11-year-old gymnast from General Santos City is under intense preparation as he goes for the gold in the 2013 Palarong Pambansa. He does not mind the inborn deformity his right arm has, which was aggravated when the thumb from his right hand was amputated due to an infection when he was 5 years old.

“I do not think about it [the deformity]. I just compete,” Cabido, who got two medals in last year’s Palarong Pambansa for the individual all-around and floor exercise categories, said.

Cabido started practicing gymnastics when he was 8, with the help of her older sister. His mother wanted John Paul to pursue the sport because it requires minimal expenses compared to other sports.

And even with his physical deformity, Cabido is able to do stellar routines. He even uses just one arm when doing the vault. He was able to win two gold medals in the CRAA meet last year, bagging a Php 6,000 incentive, which he gave to his parents.

Even if resources are limited, Cabido remains positive that he can do well in the competition. After everything he went through just to be here, winning the gold might seem a piece of cake for this gymnast. – Rappler.com
