Speed skater Magno to women athletes: ‘We can do as much as the guys can’

MANILA, Philippines – As a figure skater, Kathryn Magno understood she had to be graceful and remind herself to always execute a stunning show. Magno agreed to the terms of the sport: pilates and ballet, a well-maintained body figure, and a face that is ever-ready to flash a smile.

But recently, she let go of all that – Magno decided to switch her focus from figure skating to pursue speed skating instead.

Magno admitted she felt fulfilled not just because it was something she wanted to do but it was her body that loved the sport all the more.

“Figure skating is very hard on my body. I’m a thick girl,” Magno said with a laugh. “I just fit into speed skating so well.”

The transition from one sport to another shaped Magno’s life in a new way as both figure skating and speed skating demanded different training techniques.

“From ballet, I had to lift weights,” said Magno.

“Becoming a speed skater gave me confidence in my body because as a figure skater, I had to be aware of everything. With figure skating – how fierce that sport is – you don’t have to worry about your head, how your makeup is.”

Despite spending almost half of her life as a figure skater and ultimately just starting to become a speed skater at age 25, Magno has no regrets.

“Being an athlete in a male dominant sport, we (women) are able to show that no, we can do as much as the guys can do. I really like that,” Magno said.

“Women athletes shouldn’t be too hard on their body and pursue whatever sport you think you’re most confident with.” – Rappler.com
