Light heavyweight boxer John Marvin shines in his debut for the Philippine national boxing team

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – John Marvin did the country proud in his first fight with the Philippine flag on his chest.

Marvin, who hails from the Isle of Wight in England and has a Filipina mother from Pampanga, was fighting for the Philippines for the first time as the light heavyweight representative at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Few knew just what to expect of Marvin, a two-time Combined Services Senior Boxing champion representing the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment in the British Army. But after dishing out a serious beating to Felix Merlin Martinez, a Cuban-born Cambodian, on Monday, August 21, it’s clear Marvin is a serious competitor.

“John works hard. First time we saw him we knew he needed some polishing,” said ABAP executive director Ed Picson. “And he turned out to be coachable, disciplined and easy to get along with.

“Most of all, he doesn’t quit, no matter what.”
