Cielo Honasan completes sprint treble for PH in 2017 ASEAN Para Games

MANILA, Philippines – At age 15, Cielo Honasan won all her track events and completed the triple gold for the Philippines in her first stint in the 2017 ASEAN Para Games on Thursday, September 21 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

Honasan, who ruled both the century dash and 200m run in the previous days, dominated once more in the women’s 400m T44/46 event with a record time of 63.35 seconds en route to her 3rd straight gold. 

Gagun Pagjiraporn of Thailand claimed silver after clocking in 66.41 seconds, while Vet Chantha of Cambodia settled for bronze with 76.43 seconds.

The feat guaranteed the para athletics’ 8th gold as well as the country’s 16th gold overall in the games.

Meanwhile, Prudencia Panaliga also delivered for the athletics team as she copped her second gold with a 33.46 second-win in the women’s 200m T53/54 event. Trailing behind her were Thailand’s Tpat Chatyotsakorn, who got silver with a time of 33.93, and Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Xuan Anh, who had bronze at 34.50 seconds. 

Another Filipina Ruth Opeña went short of a podium finish in the same event as she registered 34.77 seconds. 

The Philippines has obtained 51 medals thus far, including 16 golds, 17 silvers, and 18 bronzes as of the story’s publication. – Rappler.com
