SINGAPORE — Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon more than lived up to his nickname, silencing and tearing apart Thanh Vu en route to a referee stoppage to make the finals of the ONE FC Bantamweight Grand Prix Friday night, April 5.

The fight was even on paper, but it was Belingon who better represented himself in terms of his superior striking ability. The game but overmatched Vu couldn’t find a way to hit the elusive Belingon.

On the other hand, the Filipino landed pretty much anything at will.

Keeping Vu at a distance with his jab and a head kick here and there, Belingon gradually broke down his opponent until he saw an opening.

In a flash, he lunged in with a speedy right roundhouse kick that stunned Vu and sent him reeling against the cage. The Baguio City native, who trains out of the famed Team Lakay, went straight at his foe who was visibly shaken by the impact of the kick.

Multiple punches and kicks

“The first kick that I landed, I saw it hurt him, so I gave him another kick and I never stopped attacking him until the referee stopped the fight,” said Belingon, referring to the stoppage.

Belingon then proceeded to rain down multiple punches and kicks that hit Vu’s chin solidly, causing the referee to call a halt to the contest at 1:00 of Round 2.

Vu wasn’t able to intelligently defend himself from the onslaught. In fact, still dazed and confused, Vu kept coming at Belingon thinking the fight had not yet been stopped despite the referee forcefully restraining him while waiving the fight off.

Amazing training camp

When asked what his game plan coming into the fight was, Kevin expressed he had an amazing training camp.

“I trained for everything for this fight, striking and grappling. That’s why when the fight went to the ground, I was able to control it a little bit,” said Belingon.

Belingon’s true upside is his stand up and in this particular instance, he showed a world-class ability to keep the fight on the outside. His quickness gave Vu a lot of problems as did his power.

Belingon’s next fight will take place at One FC 9, at the SM Arena at the Mall of Asia on May 31. He’ll face Masakatsu Ueda who defeated Jens “Lil’ Evil” Pulver via submission on the same card. – Rappler.com
