MANILA, Philippines – Former San Beda Red Lions head coach Ronnie Magsanoc is joining forces with coach Bo Perasol in Katipunan as an assistant coach for the Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball team.
Blue Eagle manager Epok Quimpo confirmed the news to Rappler in a text message, saying that Magsanoc started attending team practices earlier this week.
He also added Magsanoc will be the first assistant of Perasol.
The Eagles have fallen into a period of struggle after completing a 5-peat UAAP title run in 2012. They failed to make the Final Four last year following the graduation of its key players.
In 2012, Magsanoc also won a championship himself as he led the San Beda Red Lions to their third straight title in the NCAA. It was his first time coaching a college team. But he resigned after that lone season with San Beda and was succeeded by coach Boyet Fernandez.
Magsanoc was a former cager for the University of the Philippines and led them to their last UAAP title in 1986. He is also one of the 25 Greatest Players in PBA History.
He is also currently an assistant coach for the Meralco Bolts in the PBA.
Magsanoc joins fellow UP alumni Perasol and assistant coach Ricky Dandan, who served as head coach for the Fighting Maroons last season before he was replaced mid-season by Rey Madrid. –Rappler.com
