MANILA, Philippines – The FEU Tamaraws are a win away from making it back to the UAAP men’s basketball tournament finals for the first time since 2011.
Thanks to Mike Tolomia, who had 19 points and 8 rebounds, FEU took care of the DLSU Green Archers, 65-60, on Sunday afternoon, September 21, in their playoff game for the no. 2 seed at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Both teams will square off in the Final Four round beginning on Saturday, Septmber 27, with FEU having a twice to beat advantage by virtue of their victory on Sunday afternoon. De La Salle, the defending champions of the basketball tourney, is a loss away from elimination.
After four free throws by Jeron Teng and Norbert Torres tied the contest at 58, FEU failed to convert on the other end, paving the way for Arnold Van Opstal to convert a layup off a spin move that made the count 60-58 with 3:23 to go.
Tolomia managed to tie the game thanks to a scoop shot over the outstretched arms of Torres and Van Opstal, and later on gave his club a 61-60 edge at the charity line thanks to a pushing foul on Vosotros.
La Salle then committed three straight crucial turnovers, but the Tams weren’t able to take advantage. With less than a minute to go and just a single point separating both teams, Torres got in the paint and had the chance to regain the lead for his team, but missed his floater.
A layup by Carl Cruz put FEU ahead by three, but since he missed the bonus foul shot that came with his basket, DLSU had one more opportunity to tie the game. However, Almond Vosotros missed a long three, sealing the loss for the Green Archers.
Mac Belo also had an impressive outing, as he provided 15 points and 10 rebounds. Cruz and Roger Pogoy cotributed 7 markers each for FEU, which was up by 8 at the half, 32-34.
Jason Perkins had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Green Archers, who also received 13 markers from Vosotros.
Teng had just 8 points, while Van Opstal put up 7 and committed the same number of turnovers. – Rappler.com
