Adamson's dazzling backcourt tandem of Jerom Lastimosa and Joem Sabandal lead the Soaring Falcons to their first win of the UAAP Season 85 against the UE Red Warriors

MANILA, Philippines – The Adamson Soaring Falcons earned a breakthrough at the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament after a 74-61 blowout of the UE Red Warriors in the league’s first game at the Araneta Coliseum in three years on Saturday, October 8.

Joem Sabandal led all scorers with 16 points plus 4 rebounds and 2 assists, while veteran Jerom Lastimosa had a point guard’s dream game with 11 points, 7 dimes, and no turnovers in just 23 minutes.

Adamson came out of the gates blazing hot after a 23-9 start and held on to a 38-31 advantage at the half. However, much like their last game against UP, the Falcons were threatened by a second-half UE comeback attempt, which got as near as 42-45 late in the third quarter.

However, the backcourt tandem of Sabandal and Lastimosa refused to let their team roll over for the third straight game as they conspired for an 11-3 start to the fourth quarter to clinch a 13-point lead, 61-48, with 6:34 left, and never looked back.

Although the Red Warriors managed to trim their deficit to single digits, 58-67, with 3:10 left in regulation, veteran Adamson forward Vince Magbuhos slammed the door on UE’s rallying charge with a personal 5-0 burst, ending with a dagger three at the 2:10 mark for the 72-58 advantage.

“It feels good to win. That’s something that all teams look for at the start of each tournament. So hopefully we could follow it up. That’s the goal,” said Adamson head coach Nash Racela.

Luis Villegas paced the loss with 15 points in just 17 minutes off the bench with 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals, while CJ Payawal scored 12 on 4-of-7 shooting from three.

Sophomore sniper Kyle Paranada, after erupting for 25 points in UE’s last win, got clamped to just 8 points on 1-of-8 shooting.

Adamson returns to action in another quadruple-header slate on Wednesday, October 12, as coach Nash takes on his older brother Olsen and the FEU Tamaraws at 6:30 pm.

Meanwhile, UE will try to get back to its winning ways in a 4:30 pm upset bid against the La Salle Green Archers.
