High-scoring guard Schonny Winston puts on a show anew as La Salle rebounds from its loss to UE with a 17-point beatdown of FEU

MANILA, Philippines – The La Salle Green Archers got back on the winning track in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament with a dominant 87-70 victory over the FEU Tamaraws at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Saturday, October 15.

High-scoring guard Schonny Winston put on a show for the Green Archers anew as he finished with an all-around outing of 23 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals, while rookie Kevin Quiambao also continued his solid play, tallying a near double-double of 16 markers and 8 boards.

Coming off a stunning loss to the UE Red Warriors last Wednesday, the Green Archers quickly vented their ire on the Tamaraws as they rose to an early 12-point lead in the first quarter, 16-4, off a basket by Evan Nelle.

Nelle returned to the La Salle lineup after getting sidelined in the Archers’ previous outing.

After outscoring the Tamaraws, 32-15, in the second quarter for a 50-25 halftime lead, the Green Archers still showed no mercy in the third period as they even increased the gap to a whopping 31 points, 66-35, thanks to a Joaqui Manuel layup with 4:11 to play in the frame.

La Salle never looked back and kept its comfortable double-digit advantage the rest of the way as it returned to the win column and improved its record to 3-2, while keeping FEU winless in five outings – its worst start in the UAAP since the Final Four era.

Manuel chipped in 14 points, while Nelle filled up the stat sheet with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 12 assists, and 6 steals for the Green Archers, who missed their key players Michael Phillips and Mark Nonoy due to injuries.

For the Tamaraws, LJay Gonzales finally broke out of his slump as he recorded his own all-around stat line of 16 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 5 steals in the losing effort.

La Salle shoots for back-to-back wins when it faces the NU Bulldogs on Wednesday, October 19 at 11 am, while FEU aims to finally capture its breakthrough victory against the UST Growling Tigers in the 6:30 pm nightcap.
