MANILA, Philippines - What has been a difficult opening to the UAAP season for the De La Salle Green Archers just got worse.
A source close to the situation has confirmed to Rappler that La Salle's starting point guard, Thomas Torres, has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a fractured foot.
The third-year man out of La Salle Greenhills suffered the injury during his team's loss to the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 97-86, on Sunday, July 20, at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Entering this season, Torres was given the main point guard responsibilities after the departure of last year's starting PG, LA Revilla, who helped lead the team to a UAAP title in his final season.
With Torres out of the line-up, La Salle will miss its main play setter and one of the team's most viable threats from the outside.
Presumably replacing Torres in the starting unit will be Bacolod native Kib Montalbo, who's currently in his second season with the squad.
Last season, Montalbo averaged 1.6 PPG on 8.6 MPG in 12 games. In his squad's Season 77 opening loss against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws on Saturday, July 12, the sophomore put up six markers.

Meanwhile, rookie Terrence Mustre will most likely take over the main back-up point guard duties left void by Montalbo's insertion into the starting five.
La Salle suffered its second straight loss to start the 2014 UAAP season to Ateneo thanks to Kiefer Ravena, who torched the Green Archers' defense with a career-high 29 points. Von Pessumal also had a career afternoon, exploding for 21 markers, while former DLSU big Fonzo Gotladera pitched in with 17.
DLSU, which was spearheaded on Sunday by Jason Perkins' 25 points and 10 boards, will look to attain its first win of the season on Wednesday, July 23, against the National University Bulldogs - Rappler.com
