Defending champion NU remains too tough to crack as UST grabs a piece of the top spot in the UAAP women’s basketball tournament

MANILA, Philippines – The unstoppable National University Lady Bulldogs inched closer to a milestone 100th win.

In another clinical performance, NU ripped Ateneo in a wire-to-wire win, 89-52, to grab a 2-0 lead in the UAAP Season 85 women’s basketball tournament on Tuesday, October 5, at UST’s Quadricentennial Pavillion in España, Manila.

The lopsided decision extended the the Lady Bulldogs’ league record to 98 straight wins.

University of Santo Tomas also grabbed a share of the early top spot after blasting La Salle, 71-57, in the first game.

Eka Soriano dropped a career-high 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field, 4-of-8 from deep, while also dishing out 7 assists, grabbing 6 rebounds, and netting 3 steals for the Tigresses.

Camille Clarin and Annick Tiky, meanwhile, combined for 14 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ 26-9 start to blow the game wide open right from the get-go against the Blue Eagles.

“Every game it’s very important for us to have a strong start. Every team is gunning for us, they know what it requires to beat us,” said Clarin, who wound up with 14 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist.

“Right from the start, we have to take away their confidence.”

Ann Pingol led NU with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting with 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists. Mikka Cacho and Tiky also put up 13 points apiece with the latter also grabbing 8 boards.

It was another dominant outing for the Lady Bulldogs as they led by as many as 41 points in the game, 89-47, after back-to-back treys by Clarin with 1:42 remaining.

Soriano caught fire to start the game for UST, already putting up 15 points in the first half and helping the Tigresses gain a lead that went as high as 22 points, 38-16, midway through the second stanza.

Behind Charmine Torres, Fina Tchuido, and Joehanna Arciga, however, the Lady Archers clawed their way back, cutting the lead down to six, 56-50, with 5:45 left in the game.

Soriano eventually restored order, sparking a 13-5 endgame run to stave off the Lady Archers.

Up next for UST is NU in a rematch of the UAAP Season 82 finals on Sunday.

La Salle and Ateneo, which both evened their slates to 1-1, face off on the same day.
