USJ-R Jaguars dominate University of Cebu on CESAFI opening day
CEBU CITY, Philippines - The opening day of the 2015 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) basketball competition saw the college and high school teams of the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) and University of Cebu (UC) battle to contrasting fates on Saturday, August 1.
While the Jaguars blasted the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters with an 85-68 victory, the Baby Jaguars bowed to the Junior Webmasters, 54-49.
Mark Labares led the Jaguars charge with 16 points with Ricky Dyn Peromingan adding 12 points.
USJ-R signified its intention to improve its third place finish in last year's season by opening the game with an 11-0 streak in the first canto on the baskets of Ralph Jude Dinolan, Edmundo Bayhonan, Kevin Rey Villafranca, Kent Vincent Moral and Labares.
The Webmasters scored its first basket on the free throw of Joseph Daniel Mayol. Despite imposing themselves in the first quarter, the Jaguars were still able to erect a 12-point advantage, 22-10, over the Webmasters going into the second quarter.
UC began closing the gap and came as close as 22-15 on Earldred Cesar Montilla's triple. However, the Jaguars refused to be intimidated and instead increased its lead by 14 points on the combined efforts of Ferdinand Risma and Labares ending the first half at 40-26.
The appearance of Dondon Hontiveros, a former Webmaster and current Alaska Ace in the Philippine Basketball Association, failed to inspire the UC players as they fell into a 22-point deficit going into the final quarter.
UC, however, refused to concede the game with Montilla, Codilla and Garciano Puerto Jr sinking their attempts and helping the Webmasters cut the Jaguars lead to 15 points, 62-77.
But then the Jaguars waxed hot once again and eventually closed the game with a 17-point advantage, 85-68.
Montilla top-scored for UC with 15 points.
Junior Webmasters top Baby Jaguars
In the secondary division game earlier in the day, the USJ-R Baby Jaguars had a promising start by owning the first two quarters with a six-point lead, 27-21, in the halftime break.
In the second half it was Froilan Mangubat, who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, who carried the scoring load for the Junior Webmasters.
Luigi Kondrad Gabisan enabled UC to break even with USJ-R at 27-all with only 7 minutes left in the third quarter. Mangubat then sank a triple to give UC the lead for the first time, 30-27.
While the Baby Jaguars couldn't seem to find the net anymore, the Junior Webmasters sank their baskets to end the third quarter in their favor at 40-45.
UC became complacent in the second half, allowing the Baby Jaguars to come as close as 49-47 on the charity of Joshua Renz Ortiz.
Jason Florence Abejo, however, refused to allow USJ-R back into the game and scored back to back baskets en route to a 54-49 win.
USJ-R, USC named Ms. CESAFI
USJ-R still made it two wins in the opening day after its muse, Renachel Marie Tumulak, won the title of Ms. CESAFI 2015 in the high school division.
Her court is comprised of University of San Carlos' (USC) Camille Angelica Canlas, 1st runner-up; Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu's (SHS-AdC) Heaven Daisy Chapman, 2nd runner-up; University of the Visayas' (UV) Ciana Mae Innis, 3rd runner-up; and Southwestern University's (SWU) Marianne Sinajon as the 4th runner-up.
Earlier during the awarding, Sinajon was announced as the 1st runner-up after one of the CESAFI staff erroneously gave the wrong name to the host.
CESAFI commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy, Jr. and CESAFI president Father Manny Uy, S.J., immediately called to rectify the mistake and apologize to those affected.
In the collegiate division, USC's Melody Esther Loren Hodgson claimed the crown while Cebu Institute of Technology University's (CITU) Mari Cassandra Yu ended as the 1st runner-up and USJ-R's Mikee Kristine Beltran as the 2nd runner-up.
Meanwhile, the Cebu Coliseum is sure to fill up tomorrow with the last game pitting defending champions SWU Cobras, who only have nine players in its lineup, against last year's 1st runner-up USC.
