CESAFI: USC, SHS-Ateneo extend streaks; USJR continues slump
CEBU CITY, Philippines – The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles extended their winning streaks after they demolished separate opponents in another exciting games of the 15th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. In the seniors division, the USC Warriors silenced the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars, 90-75, in a game that saw two players thrown out and both head coaches receiving technical fouls for vehemently protesting the referees' calls all throughout the game.
It was a double whammy for USJR as the Baby Jaguars also bowed to the SHS-AdC Magis Eagles, 44-69, in the juniors division.
Jaguars' Kent Vincent Moral and Ferdinand Risma, who were on the bench, were thrown out of the game with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter after they entered the court during a goalmouth scramble that had their teammate Jaybie Mantilla down on the floor while grappling for ball position.
Both Moral and Risma will be suspended for one game, fined P5,000 and will be serving 4 hours of community service.
Just minutes before that incident, Christian Maconocido was called for an unsportsmanlike behavior when he hit hard Jaguars' star playmaker Ralph Jude Dinolan, who was driving for a basket.
Charles Pepito had an outstanding performance as he dominated the paint with 17 points, 13 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block which earned him the best player honors of the ballgame.
Once again, USC import Shooster Olago was very instrumental as he topscored with 24 points.
The Warriors posted its highest lead at 27 points, 80-54, on the basket of Nicolas Kyle Magat with still seven minutes left in the final canto.
The Warriors capitalized on the shooting errors of the Jaguars and led by as much as 20 points at the end of the first quarter.
The Jaguars was only able to make a dent in the Warriors lead in the third quarter with Dinolan and Kevin Rey Villafranca sinking their gift shots.
Dinolan then hit the floor when he was fouled hard by Maconocido that earned him two charities which he split.
He then combined with Mark Louie Labares and Mantilla to bring down the Warriors lead to 10 points, 45-55, with only Pepito and Giovanni Laguyo scoring for USC with a little less than five minutes left in the third quarter.
However, Pepito once again exploded in the fourth quarter with seven points along with two treys from Victor Manuel Rabat to bring their lead back up and eventually clinching victory.
With the win, USC now shares the no.1 standings with the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers as they both hold a clean slate of four wins and no loss.
In the juniors division, the Magis Eagles extend their winning streak to 5-0 while the Baby Jaguars still has to add to its one win after three games.
The SHS-AdC Magis Eagles never faced a real challenge after leading in all four quarters in double digits.
