MANILA, Philippines – Two of the most proficient scoring machines in collegiate basketball put on a wonderful show, but it was Teng and the De La Salle Green Archers who escaped with a heart-stopping 87-86 double-overtime win over Parks and National University (NU) in the 75th UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.

Teng, the rookie forward out of Xavier School, rewrote history books with a 35-point effort, the most by a freshman since the UAAP started recording computerized stats in 2003.

On the other hand, reigning MVP Parks exploded for 35 points of his own but his eruption wasn’t enough to prevent the Green Archers from recording their first double-overtime triumph this year.

“This is a special group of boys just hanging tough,” said a visibly relieved Coach Gee Abanilla. “We’re very happy about this win. We cannot afford to be left behind.”

Playing the best game of his young UAAP career, Teng also pulled down six boards and rifled in four three-pointers, none bigger than the dagger that gave La Salle an 85-79 lead early in the second overtime.

Parks tried to lift NU on his back but the Sampaloc-based squad could not overcome the deficit even with Parks hitting a triple that pushed the score to 87-86.

“I wasn’t looking to score but I had to step up,” Teng shared, noting that star guard LA Revilla missed practice the whole week, thus, the need for him to deliver more than usual.

“It’s really a blessing. Everything was going my way,” the six-foot-four Xavier alum added. “Bobby Ray is a very talented player. He’s an MVP. Idol.”

The Archers had their chance to win the game in regulation, especially after building what seemed to be a safe 57-45 lead midway through the third period.

However, with Parks on the bench saddled with four fouls, rookie Troy Rosario spearheaded a rally that trimmed the La Salle lead to one, 61-60, before Parks took over in the fourth.

The win, though, did not come without a cost for the Archers as Revilla, who had a sprained ankle, got injured again.

“Unfortunately, we lost a player today,” Abanilla said. “But it’s a good win for us. I hope we learned our lessons in the first round.”

While Teng set records for rookies and for La Salle, Parks, who also had seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals, also scored the most points by a Bulldog since now assistant coach Jeff Napa fired a league-best 43 points in 2002.

Almond Vosotros chipped in for the Archers with 18 points while Yutien Andrada added eight points and eight rebounds for the Taft-based squad, which tied their victims at 4-3.

Meanwhile, Rosario finished with 14 markers and 13 boards even as Jean Mbe struggled from the field (5-of-16 shooting) and posted 12 points and 12 rebounds. – Rappler.com
