University of the Visayas earns spot in PCCL Elite 8
UV's entrance to the Elite 8 means there will be two teams coming from Cebu who will vie for this year's National Collegiate Championship title

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, first runner-up in the 2015 CESAFI, earned a slot into the Elite 8 who will be vying for the 2015 title of the National Collegiate Championship of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL), which will be held in Manila from December 13 to 17.

The Green Lancers barged into the Elite 8 by sweeping their two games in the Visayas-Mindanao qualifiers held at the Ormoc City Superdome from December 8 to 10. First, the 10-time CESAFI champion thrashed Mindanao champion Holy Trinity College Wildcats of General Santos, 98-75, then secured their Elite 8 ticket with their 76-47 demolition of University of Negros Occidental Recoletos (UNO-R) Rams, the Visayas regional champion.

The UV Green Lancers reinforced their CESAFI lineup with Ormoc’s golden boy Christian Bolano and Monic Soliva, according to assistant and scouting coach Van Halen Parmis.

Josue Segumpan topscored for the UV Green Lancers in their match against Holy Trinity with 20 points after sinking 6 of his 7 attempts from beyond the arc. Jun Kent Manzo chipped in 14 points while Bolano debuted with 7 points.

In their game against UNO-R, Steve Cedrick Akomo led the Green Lancers with 16 points. Also contributing to the scoring spree were former Batang Gilas players Leonard Santillan, who added 15 points, and Arvie Cabanero, who contributed 10 points.

The rest of the members of the team are Alwin Aguirre, Francisco Arong, Jayson Balabag, Alfred Codilla, Michael Angelo Macion, Vincent Mendoza, Jerome Napao and Rey Anthony Suerte.

Longer route to PCCL

UV had to take the longer route to the PCCL National Collegiate Championship after losing this year’s CESAFI title to the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, who earned an automatic spot to the Elite 8.

UV’s entrance to the Elite 8 means that there will be two teams coming from Cebu City who will be vying for this year’s title of the National Collegiate Championship.

Other teams who earned an automatic entry to the Elite 8 are UAAP champion Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws, UAAP runner-up University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, NCAA champion Letran Knights and NCAA runner-up San Beda College (SBC) Red Lions.

The 3 remaining slots were contested via the Vis-Min and Luzon-Metro Manila qualifiers.

Aside from UV, also seeing action in the Vis-Min qualifying was CESAFI third runner-up University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars.

The USJR Jaguars lost their chance early when they conceded their first game against UNO-R, 71-76. They, however, made up for it by crafting an 81-69 win over Holy Trinity, to at least not come home empty-handed.

The PCCL National Collegiate Championship 2015 will played in a knockout “step ladder” with the team remaining standing to bring home the title.

Defending champion is the San Beda College Red Lions.

Should the UV Green Lancers’ PCCL campaign be a success, they will be the first team from the province to bring home the National Collegiate Championship title. – Rappler.com
