UP stuns NCAA champ San Beda, books FilOil quarters berth
MANILA, Philippines – University of the Philippines (UP) stunned NCAA champion San Beda University (SBU), 56-54, as the Fighting Maroons rolled to their 4th straight win in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup in San Juan on Friday, June 1.
The UP Maroons uncorked a 12-2 run anchored on Jun Manzo and Javi Gomez de Liano on the way to the thrilling win that secured UP a slot in the quarter-finals.
“I’m proud of what we accomplished, [especially] beating a strong time like San Beda,” said UP head coach Bo Perasol.
Big men Gomez de Liano and Bright Akhuetie topscored for the Maroons with 10 points apiece. Jun Manzo also chipped in 9 points and 5 assists, while Paul Desiderio added 7.
The Maroons traded shots with the reigning NCAA champions and built an early 11-7 lead. But the Red Lions caught up by the second frame with Javee Mocon putting up back-to-back triples that sparked a 13-2 run as Robert Bolick and Calvin Oftana also contributed from beyond the arc to trim it to 26-28 at the break.
Javee Mocon paced the Red Lions with 18 points on a 3/5 (60%) shooting from beyond the arc and 5 rebounds.
Earlier, the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles demolished the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) Atlas, 83-59, to keep their record perfect at 6-0.
The De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers also had their own 6-0 streak going as they turned the tables on an early-leading Mapua Red Cardinals, 102-95, despite the efforts of Exerjel Biteng, who waxed hot with 6 triples on 6/10 shooting for a game-high 34 points.
