San Beda hands La Salle first loss in Filoil Preseason Cup
MANILA, Philippines – San Beda College snapped De La Salle University’s 6-game winning run in the 12th FilOil Flying V Preseason Cup with a thrilling 72-70 triumph at the San Juan Arena on Monday, June 4.
Behind 20 points and 3 timely triples from Javee Mocon, who also had 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and two steals, the Red Lions dealt the Green Archers their first loss in the tournament in a game that saw two champion teams square off.
It was a nip-and-tuck battle as the game entered the payoff period with both teams tied at 55-all but it was San Beda, just like the last time they met in a Filoil title bout, that came out victorious.
Donald Tankoua and Eugene Toba finished with 9 and 8 points, respectively, and combined for 11 boards for the Red Lions.
Toba showed off his range as he went a perfect 2-of-2 from downtown — back-to-back triples that gave San Beda a 37-30 lead at halftime.
The Red Lion’s advantage grew to 9 points in the 3rd period but the Green Archers, displaying a formidable defensive effort, chipped away at San Beda’s lead to knot the score heading into the final frame.
Andrei Caracut topscored for the Green Archers with 20 points.
Big men Justine Baltazar and Taane Samuel chipped in 13 points apiece and conjoined for 21 rebounds.
