MANILA, Philippines – Adamson University and College of St. Benilde hacked out separate wins to advance to the next round in the 12th FilOil Preseason Cup on Friday, June 15 at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. 

 The Adamson Soaring Falcons turned back the Lyceum Pirates, 85-75, to nail a quarterfinals slot in the preseason basketball tournament with a 6-2 record. 

Jerrick Ahanmisi paced the Falcons with 14 points on a 5-of-9 shooting, while Sean Manganti chalked up 12 points and 7 rebounds.  

The Falcons will face the San Beda Red Lions in the quarterfinals. 

After Ahamnisi towed the team to a 15-point advantage in the second quarter, 53-38, the Falcons held on the rest of the way.

The Pirates – who bowed out with a 3-5 record – couldn’t recover even with CJ Perez dropping 23 points and Jaycee Marcelino collecting 13 points before fouling out early in the last frame. 

Earlier, the St. Benilde Blazers forged an 87-79 win over the San Sebastian Stags for a 7-1 record that secured their spot in the quarterfinals.

Justin Gutang sizzled with 17 points with 8 rebounds to lift the Blazers, who will go up against the University of the Philippines in the next round.

Unique Naboa also drilled 12 points, 9 coming from beyond the arc while big man Clement Leutcheu notched a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Blazers..

A 16-0 run in the third quarter anchored on Gutang and Leutcheu dismantled an already frustrated San Sebastian, which had both Regile Ilagan and Jessie Sumoda fouling out in the 4th period.
