FilOil: Debuting SSC drops UP; Serrano lifts DLSU over CEU

Ricci Rivero's game-high 19 points isn't enough to power the UP Maroons past the San Sebastian Stags

MANILA, Philippines –The San Sebastian Stags had a rousing debut in the 2019 FilOil Preseason Cup after downing the undermanned UP Fighting Maroons, 73-64, on Friday, May 17.

Hotshot guard RK Ilagan led the charge with 18 points, 15 in the 1st half alone, on a 4-of-10 clip from downtown. Lanky forward Allyn Bulanadi chipped in 16 markers, 13 in the 2nd half, with 7 rebounds to help seal the winning debut.

Despite UP’s loss, veteran Stags coach Egay Macaraya had all the praises for them in the post-game presser.

UP, alam naman natin kung gaano sila kalakas, but I guess they are not ready for game form, marami pang injury,” he said. “But I know, come UAAP, gagaling yan at team to beat yan.”

(We know just how strong UP is, but I guess they are not ready for game form as they still have many injuries. But I know, come UAAP, they’d be better and be a team to beat.)

The Stags jumped out on the Maroons early in the 1st half, ending with a 37-31 lead by intermission. Bulanadi then took over the offensive load from Ilagan and towed the team lead to as high as 15 late in the 3rd frame.

While UP would rally back within single digit in the 4th after a Bright Akhuetie layup at the 1:58 mark, touted recruit Ricci Rivero then blew two straight free throws with less than a minute to go. In response, Stags’ big man Jessie Sumoda converted an easy bucket on the other end to seal the deal for San Sebastian.

Rivero led UP with 19 points as UP fell to 2-2 for the season.

Earlier, the La Salle Green Archers outlasted the CEU Scorpions, 71-67.

Second-year guard Encho Serrano erupted for 18 points, all in the 2nd half, to lead La Salle to a 3-1 slate.

As Scorpion guard JD Formento broke a 47-all deadlock early in the 4th with a triple, Serrano responded with 12 straight points, including back-to-back threes to cap his personal run.

However, CEU was right in the mix until the final minute of regulation when Formento fired another long bomb to inch within two, 67-69. They had a chance to go ahead in the next possession, but Formento’s heat check triple rimmed out.

Off the rebound, Aljun Melecio then fired a long pass to a streaking Serrano, who drove in the dagger layup with just 6 ticks left on the clock.

Formento led CEU with 22 points on 4-of-8 shooting from downtown. Senegalese big man Maodo Diouf churned out 13 markers and 14 boards as CEU suffered their first loss in 3 games.

In the other games, the CSB Blazers routed the JRU Heavy Bombers, 79-56, while the LPU Pirates outgunned their fierce NCAA rival Letran Knights by 6, 101-95.
