San Beda stays unbeaten; La Salle dominates San Sebastian
The Red Lions complete a seven-game elimination sweep as the Green Archers also advance in the preseason tournament

MANILA, Philippines – San Beda and La Salle pulled off contrasting wins to keep hold of the top two spots in Group A and put a lock on playoff seats in the 2019 Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup on Friday, June 14.

Far Eastern University and Adamson also stayed inside the top 4 in Group B to advance to the next round following separate victories in the quadruple-header at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Even as UST executed its famous “mayhem” defense, San Beda came out quick to respond and posted a 75-73 escape to complete a seven-game elimination sweep.

James Kwekuteye led the Red Lions with 21 points and 3 assists, while Donald Tankoua had a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds.

The Tigers held a double-digit cushion coming into the second half, 40-30, but the Red Lions staged a 13-2 run as momentum shifted to San Beda side despite the tension following the technical foul slapped on head coach Boyet Fernandez.

With the shift in energy, the Red Lions maximized their opportunities by creating several defensive stops and actively denying UST’s outside shots.

The Tigers saw a glimpse of hope late in the 4th, but foul trouble made it harder for them to catch up.

UST bowed out with a 2-5 win-loss record despite the exceptional performanceS of Soulemane Chabiyo, who tallied 24 points and 12 rebounds, and Mark Nonoy, who shot 15 points.

La Salle also banked on a third-quarter run to hack out an 84-70 victory over San Sebastian and secure the No. 2 seed in Group A with a 5-2 record.

The Green Archers banked on the phenomenal performance of Justine Baltazar, who starred with 18 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Aljun Melecio also delivered with 15 points, 12 from beyond the arc, and 5 assists.

La Salle created cushion halfway through the 3rd quarter with a 16-2 spurt in a span of 3 minutes, giving the Archers enough breathing room entering the final frame.

Despite the effort of the Stags to keep hustling for points, La Salle’s lead was far too large for them to overcome.

San Sebastian’s RK Ilagan led his team 16 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.

Adamson, meanwhile, forged a hard-fought win over the NU Bulldogs, 70-61, for a 5-2 record.

Lenda Douanga led Adamson with a double-double of 17 points and 24 rebounds, while Jerrick Ahanmisi also chipped in 11 points.

The Falcons also banked on a strong second half for a 52-40 advantage even as the Bulldogs tried to put up a fight behind Dave Ildefonso (18 points) and Jonas Tibayan (15 points).
