MANILA, Philippines — After the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses lost the third set, head coach Odjie Mamon shuffled his cards and inserted Gi Reyes.

The gamble paid off for UST.

The Golden Tigresses found unlikely heroes in Reyes and Jessey De Leon as they fended off a spirited Adamson University Lady Falcons’ fightback to eke out a thrilling 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 16-25, 15-7 victory in the 10th Shakey’s V-League First Conference quarterfinals at The Arena Sunday, May 5.

“My instruction to Gi was to make her teammates happy because after losing the third set, we lost our focus,” said Mamon. “Rhea (Dimaculangan) and Aiza (Maizo) lost their focus when we lost the third set and we lost that set because of the delay when Adamson players contested a call.”

UST was seemingly in control of the match, taking the first two sets as Maika Ortiz and guest player Maizo waxed hot, putting on an array of offensive attacks.

The Lady Falcons, through the valiant efforts of skipper Pau Soriano and Faye Guevara made it an interesting showdown, edging the Tigresses in the third set before dumping UST in the fourth frame to send the match into a fifth and deciding set.

Enter Reyes and De Leon.

Reyes changed the completion of the game when she came in the fifth set, rallying her teammates and scoring off a kill, 9-6 before De Leon, Reyes and Ortiz joined hands in a 5-0 blitz to seal the win.

Ortiz fired 17 points while Maizo and vastly-improved Pam Lastimosa chipped in 15 and 14, respectively. Reyes and De Leon combined for 13 markers for UST, who improved to 2-0.

The Lady Falcons, who dropped to 2-1 in the standings, were led by the game-high 25 points of Soriano while Shiela Pineda had 12. Guest player Angela Benting and Guevara contributed 10 apiece. – Rappler.com
