MANILA, Philippines — The University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) Lady Altas boosted its chances of making the semifinals by thumping an also-ran San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R) Lady Stags, 25-19, 25-27, 25-23, 25-22 in the 10th Shakey’s V-League First Conference quarterfinals at The Arena, Tuesday, May 7.

After splitting the first two sets, the Lady Stags entered the third frame with fire in their eyes, taking a huge 19-7 lead behind reigning NCAA Rookie of the Year and Best Attacker Gretchel Soltones at the firing end.

But the Las Piñas-based volleybelles turned things around as Honey Royse Tubino and Sandra Delos Santos put their acts together for a searing 9-0 blitz to move within 15-19.

“We got united as a team,” said Tubino. “We badly need this win in order for us to make it to the Final Four.”

Two straight points from Tubino tied the match at 22-all before completing Perpetual’s come-from-behind win in the third set with an attack.

After losing what seemed to be a won set, San Sebastian went out flat in the fourth, with Delos Santos joining the scoring fray for the Lady Altas as they built a 12-7 lead.

But reigning MVP Jang Bualee showed grit to rally the Lady Stags and knot the count at 15-all.

The Lady Altas, though, will not be denied.

Tubino and setter Arriane Argarin, who had 38 excellent sets, connived down the stretch to seal the win for the Lady Altas, who improved to 1-1.

Tubino and Delos Santos came away with 17 points apiece while Bualee led the Lady Stags with her 28 points. Soltones and guest player Suzanne Roces added 11 and 10, respectively for San Sebastian, who bowed out of contention with a 0-3 mark. – Rappler.com
