MANILA, Philippines — The De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers survived a stiff challenge from the Lyceum Pirates, 70-64 in a fight-marred finish in the 2013 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Friday, May 10, at The Arena in San Juan.

In what La Salle head coach Gee Abanilla called his team’s “most physical game so far,” the cagers from Taft outplayed their Intramuros counterparts in a match that saw six players getting ejected — three from each squad.

Late game square-off

With only 3:40 in the clock, the Pirates’ Jeremiah Taladua gave a hard foul to DLSU’s Gabby Reyes, with the latter being quick to react.

It was La Salle center Norbert Torres, however, who delivered a powerful shove from behind to Taladua, prompting the scuffle that sent Archers Arnold Van Opstal, Mat Salem and Robert Bolick and Lyceum’s John Azores, Shaq Alanes and Jason Baltazar out of the playing court for leaving the bench.

Torres and Taladua were assessed unsportsmanlike fouls.

Gutsy stand

La Salle started the game on a 7-0 run but the Pirates did not budge and forced a close game all throughout.

The backcourt tandem of Tirso Lesmoras and Dexter Zamora pulled the Pirates in the third to within a point, 47-48.

But Jason Perkins and Torres asserted their strength in the final period, with five players fouling out for Lyceum.

Jeron Teng paced La Salle with 19 points, but credited his teammates for an overall effort.

“I cannot singlehandedly carry the team; It’s a team effort that’s why we won the game,” the reigning UAAP Rookie of the Year said.

The Pirates finished the game with 37 fouls, giving 56 free throw attempts to the Archers.

With the win, DLSU moves to 4-0 in Group B. – Rappler.com
