FilOil: Adeogun powers San Beda past FEU

MANILA, Philippines — Fresh from its United States training, San Beda College halted Far Eastern University’s winning run with an 80-76 win in the 2013 FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup Saturday, May 18.

Ola Adeogun banged his way to 10 of 15 points in a decisive fourth-quarter spurt while adding nine rebounds as the Red Lions came home with a victory.

“I’m just thankful that coach believed in me,” said the Nigerian center. “I struggled in the early part of the game, but when coach put me back, I redeemed myself.”

Mike Tolomia waxed hot in the opening moments of the game, scoring the Tamaraws’ first 11 points, but Arthur dela Cruz exploded for San Beda with nine markers as the Red Lions trailed, 22-21, after one quarter.

It was a back-and-forth tussle for both squads until Adeogun asserted his might inside the final period. And from a 64-all deadlock, Adeogun scored four straight baskets as San Beda surged to a 76-68 lead.

Former UAAP MVP Ryan Roose Garcia launched a run of his own to cut the deficit to two, 76-74, with over a minute left on the clock.

However, dela Cruz hit the go-ahead floater to push the Red Lions to safety.

Dela Cruz, a former Ateneo cager, top scored for the Mendiola crew with 18 points while point guard Baser Amer added nine points and eight assists.

Garcia paced FEU with 23 markers.

“We didn’t really look to win (in the US),” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez. “We looked to learn. And it showed in this game.” – Rappler.com
