San Beda sweeps La Salle for first ever PCCL title
San Beda's victory over La Salle, last year's PCCL champion, gives the school its first-ever PCCL championship

MANILA, Philippines – The San Beda Red Lions can now add a new trophy to their already crowded mantle.

Thanks to an impressive late game run, the San Beda Red Lions completed a two-game sweep of the De La Salle Green Archers in game two of their 2014 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Finals series, 73-67, on Monday, December 1, at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

San Beda’s victory over La Salle, last year’s PCCL champion, gave the school its first-ever PCCL championship and prevented the Green Archers from winning the tournament for the third time.

The win can also be considered payback for the Red Lions, who lost to DLSU the last time they met in a finals series at the 2014 Hanes Flying V FilOil preseason tournament.

Ola Adeogun was crowned the MVP of the PCCL after the game. He finished with 19 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist for San Beda. Art Dela Cruz filled up the stat sheet adding 15 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

Baser Amer struggled from the field, going 6-of-24, but put up 14 points, dished 4 dimes, and hit the the most critical jumper in the final quarter.

La Salle, who played with just seven players and missed a number of key rotation pieces, was led by Jeron Teng and his 25 points and 4 assists. Prince Rivero put up 11 markers and 8 rebounds, while Ben Mbala had 10 points and 12 boards.

DLSU was ahead 50-47 entering the final period, 10 minutes away from forcing a decisive game three.

La Salle scored first in the fourth quarter to push their lead to 5, but was countered by a 7-0 San Beda run that gave the Red Lions the lead and momentum of the game as SBC crowd at the Ynares Arena erupted to their feet.

The Green Archers answered with a 7-0 run of their own thanks to timely baskets from Teng to establish another five-point edge, 59-54, but the Red Lions didn’t cave in and responded like the five-time defending NCAA champions they are.

An 8-1 run by San Beda – capped off by an and-one play from Adeogun – gave their team a 62-60 lead with 4 minutes to go. DLSU failed to answer, then Amer broke DLSU’s press defense and converted a wide-open mid-range jumper that gave San Beda a 4-point cushion.

DLSU couldn’t get the ball inside to Mbala in the subsequent possessions, and had to lean on outside jumpers from Kib Montalbo and Thomas Torres, both of whom failed to convert and went a combined 6-of-19 from the floor.

With a little over a minute to go, Dela Cruz converted a basket to put his team up 66-60 – a deficit the Green Archers would not be able to come back from.

Both teams shot below average from the field, with San Beda making just 34% of their attempts and La Salle converting just 35%. DLSU took only 12 3-balls in the game, making 4, while SBC went 3-of-25 (Amer was 2-of-14).

The Red Lions committed just 10 turnovers and forced their opponents to 18 miscues. – Rappler.com
