CESAFI: Cobras survive Jaguars in overtime
The Cobras stay undefeated with an 8-0 record, while the Jaguars remain in third with 4-3

CEBU CITY, Philippines – For the second time this season, the Southwestern University-Phinma (SWU-Phinma) Cobras had to go through a 5-minute extension to outsmart a determined University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 85-75.

The two squads faced off Tuesday, September 6, in the collegiate division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Incorporated (CESAFI) basketball tournament. The regulation period ended at 71-all.

The first time that SWU and USJ-R met in the first round of elimination last August 21, it was the Cobras who failed to close out the game in regulation. This time, it was them who forced the extension courtesy of Sir Shaquille Imperial who converted his two gift shots when he was fouled by Ralph Jude Dinolan with only two seconds left in regulation.

The win allowed the Cobras to solidify their hold of the top spot as they extended their winning streak to 8-0, while the Jaguars stay in third with a 4-3 win-loss record.

It was also the Jaguars who frustrated the Cobras from finishing in third place last season, 2-1. While SWU-Phinma only had a 9-man lineup then, it’s USJ-R which has been reduced to 10 players this season.

Jovanie Luz earned the Best Player tag with his 21 points, while Congolese import Quentin Nzuzi chipped in 20 and Mark Tallo finished with 19.

The Jaguars also had 4 players scoring in double figures led by Dinolan with 15 markers, John Lemuel Pastias and Tricky Dyn Peromingan with 13 each, and Nelvin Navarra with 12 points.

The game featured several lead changes and 13 deadlocks, 7 of which happened in the final canto.

The Jaguars had a chance of sealing the game in their favor when they took a 2-point lead, 71-69, on a trey from Victor Baldo Nunez who was wide open when he received a pass from Dinolan.

Tallo then attempted a shot from the rainbow in the return play but he missed and the ball was immediately pulled down by USJ-R’s Jaybie Mantilla. Dinolan then attempted a layup but he missed, and in the scuffle for ball possession fouled Imperial, who sank his gift shots and forced the extension.

In overtime, the Jaguars were keeping pace with the Cobras, until the 2:21 mark when Luz missed one of his gift shots but the ball was tipped in by Nzuzi. This allowed the Cobras to pull away to a 4-point lead at 79-75. Tallo then hit from behind the arc for an 82-75 advantage for the Cobras.

Nunez tried to bring the Jaguars back into the game but his attempt was blocked. Imperial once again hit one from the free throw line and Tallo sealed the win for the Cobras.

Meanwhile, in the lone high school contest, the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Grey Wolves finally ended their 2-game skid with a huge 77-40 win over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wild Kittens.

No games will be played on September 8Thursday, as the venue will not be available. Games will resume on September 10Saturday.
