UV Green Lancers end eliminations with devastation of CITU Wildcats

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers moved a step closer to defending their CESAFI collegiate title after ending the elimination round at the top of the leaderboard with a 101-70 devastation of the Cebu Institute of Technology University (CITU) Wildcats Saturday, September 30 at the New Cebu Coliseum.

After conceding their first game of the season to the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, the reigning champions went on to win the rest of their 11 games for an 11-1 win-loss record.

The Green Lancers will enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinal round next week along with University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars who finished at the second spot with a 9-3 slate following their 107-94 outsmarting of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers.

The reigning champions will face the Warriors who dropped to the fourth spot after losing to the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 59-69, in the last game of the elimination round.

The Webmasters and the Warriors finished with the same 7-5 record but the former climbed up to the third spot owing to their higher point difference. In the first round of elimination, the Warriors won 67-62, while earlier, the Webmasters won 69-59.

The Webmasters will face the Jaguars in the semifinals.

The Panthers bowed out of the tournament with a 3-8 win-loss record while the Wildcats managed to post one win to become the bottom dweller with their 1-11 card.

The once powerhouse Southwestern University (SWU) Phinma Cobras ended the season in unfamiliar territory with a 4-8 record, only good enough for a fifth spot.

The winners in the semifinals will move on to contest the CESAFI basketball collegiate title this year in a best-of-3 series while the loser will fight for third place in a knockout game.
