UC Webmasters complete CESAFI finals cast, will face UV for title
CEBU CITY, Philippines - The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters will be making a trip to the finals following a hard-fought overtime win over the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars, 80-75, Saturday, October 7, at the New Cebu Coliseum.
The Webmasters get a shot at the collegiate title of the CESAFI basketball tournament against defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers after beating the Jaguars twice in the semifinal round.
The Webmasters, who have been turned into a contender by their new coach, Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, last played in the finals back in 2011, when they won the title for the second straight year with 3-time PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo at center.
Two of UC’s players registered double-doubles in the victory, including team captain Garciano “Garexx” Puerto Jr, who had been receiving advice from recently retired PBA cager Dondon Hontiveros, an alumni of UC who was in attendance. Puerto towed the Webmasters with 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Webmasters import, Frederick Ngoh Elombi of Cameroon chipped in 17 points and pulling down 10 boards despite being in foul trouble in the fourth quarter.
Two other Webmasters also scored in double figures - John Calvin Jabello with 14 points and Justine Dacalos with 12 points.
It had looked like the Jaguars had the win and the finals ticket in the bag as they were leading by as much as 5 points, 71-66, with a little less than 40 seconds remaining in the ballgame.
Elombi brought the Webmasters closer, 68-71, by converting a pair of free throws.
Julius Pacanuayan had a chance to pull the Jaguars away when he earned two free throws courtesy of Puerto. However, he failed to sink either of them.
With the seconds trickling out, Dacalos tied the game with a trey and forged overtime at 71-all, keeping the Webmasters title hopes alive.
In the extra 5 minutes, the game deadlocked twice before Joren Tagudin managed to wedge a 3-point gap for the Webmasters by converting his free throws which he earned when he got fouled by Nelvin Navarra inside the last two minutes.
In the return play, Braulio Compra of the Jaguars then had his attempt blocked but the Jaguars were still in the running as they got the rebound. However, Dacalos managed to steal the ball from Tricky Dyn Peromingan and earned two gift shots when he was fouled.
Dacalos then converted his charities to seal the Webmasters victory.
The Jaguars also had a double-double performance from two players as Ralph Jude Dinolan led his team with 15 points and pulled 11 rebounds and Navarra had 10 points and 10 rebounds to go along with 5 blocks.
Another Jaguar who chipped in much in the losing cause was Peromingan with 15 points.
The Jaguars will face the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors in a knockout game for third place on Tuesday, October 10 before Game 1 of the best-of-3 Finals series between the UV Baby Lancers and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles for the high school CESAFI basketball title.
