CEBU CITY, Philippines (UPDATED) – The University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers drew first blood in the Best-of-3 Title series of the CESAFI junior basketball tournament by outsmarting defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles, 69-59, on Tuesday, October 10 at the New Cebu Coliseum.

However, the Magis Eagles showed their spirit by staying focused and capitalizing on several mistakes the Baby Lancers committed, eventually ending the first half just 6 points behind, 28-34. 

Game 2 will be on Thursday, October 12, 5 pm, with the UV Baby Lancers leading the Best-of-3 junior title series 1-0.

Earlier, the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars mangled the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors, 85-69, to end their CESAFI collegiate campaign in third place.

The Jaguars had ended the double elimination round at second place. However, they lost their chance at the title when they wasted their twice-to-beat advantage after bowing to the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters who will be facing the defending champion UV Green Lancers in also a Best-of-3 series for the collegiate title with
