NCAA: San Sebastian, EAC, Mapua all win
Two struggling teams come away with important wins, while Mapua easily dispatches CSB

MANILA, Philippines – The San Sebastian Stags, EAC Generals, and Mapua Cardinals all came away on the winning side after a trio of NCAA games on Friday, August 7, at the San Juan Arena.

Calisaan goes off for 35 as San Sebastian downs Lyceum

Michael Calisaan registered a career-high 35 points and grabbed 16 boards to lead the San Sebastian Golden Stags past the Lyceum Pirates, 77-70.

Using a dominant second quarter where they limited their opponents to just 9 points, the Stags erased a 6-point deficit and turned it into a 13-point lead in a span of just 10 minutes.

Lyceum rallied late and at one point trimmed their opponents’ lead to 75-70, but free throws from Ryan Costelo, who finished with 12 points, sealed the win for the now 2-6 Stags.

Jamil Ortuoste also played well in the victory, scoring 15 points. Shaq Alanes led Lyceum with 17 points, while Vic Nguidjol pitched in 14 markers in the Pirates’ 7th loss in 8 games this season.

Unbeaten no more: Ayo-less Letran falls to EAC

Playing without their suspended head coach Aldin Ayo, the Letran Knights suffered their first loss this NCAA season as they dropped to the EAC Generals, 83-69.

Entering the game with only a 1-5 record, the Generals leaned on the production of Cameroon native Hamadou Laminou who finished with 20 points and 24 rebounds. Jorem Morada pitched in with 18 markers.

EAC entered the final period with a slim 52-50 lead, but a 14-3 run had them on the course for an easy win.

Letran didn’t go down easily as they managed to trim the deficit to 8 and 9, but a 4-point play by Morada, which put his club ahead 73-60, essentially served as the dagger for the victory.

Kevin Racal finished with 18 points, while Mark Cruz put up 16 for the now 7-1 Knights, who also received 11 points from Rey Nambatac.

Co-less Mapua blows out struggling CSB

Thanks to an impressive, 19-point, 20-rebound performance by Allwell Oraema, the undermanned Mapua Cardinals easily dispatched the struggling CSB Blazers, 76-64, for their 4th win in 7 games.

The Cardinals were playing without head coach Atoy Co, who like Ayo, was also suspended on Thursday, August 6. (READ: Aldin Ayo, Atoy Co receive one-game suspensions)

Mapua was absolutely dominant in the first quarter, using headstrong defense to force the Blazers into tough shots that led to a 29-7 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Blazers didn’t play that much better in the second period, and were trailing by 20, 47-27, at the half. Mapua stayed in control from there on out to eventually give CSB their 6th loss in 8 contests this season.

Darrell Menina also had 13 points to help the Cardinals in their easy win, while Josan Nimes pitched in 11 points.

JJ Domingo led CSB with 14 markers, while Jonathan Grey had 12 points in the losing effort.
