San Beda dismantles EAC for first win of second round
Art Dela Cruz scores a career-high 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals

MANILA, Philippines – After suffering a disappointing defeat to Arellano University last week, San Beda College returned its winning ways at the expense of Emilio Aguinaldo College on Tuesday, August 25 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

The Red Lions devoured the San Marcelino-based Generals, 96-84, to claim their first triumph in the second round of the NCAA Season 91 men’s senior basketball tourney and improve their win-loss standing to 8-2.

“I told the boys that we should be playing at a different level come second round. It turned out to be okay [in our first game in the second round],” San Beda head coach Jamike Jarin stated in the post-game interview.

PBA-bound Art Dela Cruz scored a career-high 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals to lead the Mendiola Five.

“I just needed to step up in this game because we were lacking in manpower. I’m happy with my performance, but I have to improve in my defense,” Dela Cruz stressed.

Aside from Dela Cruz, Amiel Soberano also contributed to San Beda’s victory over EAC by registering 18 of his 20 points in the second half.

“I have to give credit for all the players that were able to give the ball to Mr. Soberano, who was able to contribute in today’s scoring,” Jarin said of the young shooting guard.

San Beda squared off with the Andy De Guzman-mentored troop without starting center Ola Adeogun, who received a one-game suspension for kicking a dugout door at halftime of the aforementioned game against Arellano.

To compound the misery, Joe Presbitero likewise sat out for the red shirts due to typhoid fever, prompting Jarin to solely field backup bigman Pierre Tankoua, who had a double-double performance of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Although EAC downgrades to a 2-8 record, Francis Munsayac headed the Generals’ frontline unit with 20 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.
