Jarin blocks out alumni’s criticism, holds true to beliefs
The San Beda head coach stuck with his line-up despite an angry fan clamouring for change

MANILA, Philippines – The San Beda Red Lions were in control of the Adamson Soaring Falcons in the fourth quarter of their FilOil game on Thursday, June 2, but with the amount of criticism the coaching staff was receiving from some alumni, that seemed hard to believe.

San Beda, which wound up winning 86-81 and improved to 5-1 in the tournament, had its second and third rotation guys playing almost the entirety of the second half, a move which head coach Jamike Jarin made for the development of his bench players.

That decision, however, made a pair of San Beda fans at the arena unhappy. During stoppages in gameplay, the two elderly men would scream at the coaching staff: “Tankoua, i-pasok!” Later on, it was screams of “You need big man!”

(Put in Tankoua!)

Tankoua, San Beda’s foreign student-athlete, finished the game with 21 points and 15 rebounds in only 26 minutes, sitting out the fourth period.

The Red Lions were still ahead by 13 with over 7 minutes to go when the visibly irritated fans started getting furious, with one of them even getting off his seat and approaching the San Beda bench during a time-out, ordering the re-insertion of the big guy.

The Falcons got within 4 later on thanks to timely 3-point shooting, but San Beda still remained firmly in control of the game and didn’t let up for the loss, with the bench closing out the contest.

“It is more on you develop your players,” Jarin explained the decision to finish using the subs later on. “The problem when you have a good team, that’s a danger. You know they’re good. So once you’re good, sometimes, it [falls] down.

“The thing is, now that you’re good, you need to get better, so when you’re better already, you need to be the best. So that’s what we’re trying to build up.”

Jarin was also asked about the insistence of the alumni. An experienced head coach, he’s had the reputation for tinkering with line-ups but managing to stay successful nonetheless.

“For me, you’ve been doing this for the longest time. If you listen to everybody, you’re going to go crazy. But everybody has their opinions,” he told Rappler.

“I’ve been coaching basketball for more than 25 years. I’m not a doctor. I don’t know if he’s an engineer, he’s an architect, but if an architect or a doctor is doing he’s operation, I wouldn’t be going to his operating room and telling him I think you’re doing the wrong thing. I’m not that type of guy.”

Coaching a team with a rich basketball history like San Beda obviously has its perks, but the championship-or-bust expectations are present as well, whether it’s the NCAA men’s tournament or even the Filoil preseason tilt.

Jarin, however, chooses instead to concentrate on the rapport he’s building with his players and blocking out the outside noise.

“As long as I’m in the circle of these boys, I don’t really much pay attention,” he said.

“But you’re human. You get hurt with what people say. But like what I said, the important thing here is your players and nothing else.” – Rappler.com
