Next CSB head coach likely down to 3 choices – source
Two former champion head coaches and a former UAAP player are said to be on the final list

MANILA, Philippines – Unless there are last-minute changes, the College of St Benilde (CSB) has finalized its search for the next head coach of its men’s basketball team to 3 choices, with an official decision expected to be made over the next few weeks, a source told Rappler.

The source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the topic, said that CSB is looking at former PBA coaches Siot Tanquingcen and Koy Banal, as well as former DLSU Green Archer Ty Tang, as choices to take over the Blazers after their forgettable campaign in NCAA Season 92.

Rappler tried to seek confirmation from CSB center for sports development director Stephen Fernandez but he has not responded as of posting time.

Banal, meanwhile, has confirmed to Rappler that he is in the running for the coaching job.

St Benilde’s last head coach, Gabby Velasco, resigned following the school’s disappointing 1-17 performance this year. In his 4 years as the Blazers’ main play-caller, Velasco compiled a 22-50 record. His best season with the team was in 2014, when CSB went 11-7 and nearly made the Final Four.

Tang, a recently-retired PBA player, and Tanquingcen, currently an assistant coach for the Green Archers in the UAAP, were at first the only choices for the job until Banal was added to the mix last week, according to the source.

Tanquingcen spent time coaching both Barangay Ginebra and the San Miguel Beermen in the PBA from 2004 to 2001, including winning titles with the Gin Kings in 2004 and 2005.

Banal, who won a pair of championships with the FEU Tamaraws in the UAAP from 2003-2004, has also previously coached in the NCAA with the San Beda Red Lions (2005-2006), who he led to a title, and the Arellano Chiefs (2011-2013).

Banal, a former NCAA Coach of the Year, also coached the Barako Bull Energy/Phoenix Fuel Masters from 2014-2016.

Although the 32-year-old Tang’s coaching resume pales in comparison to the two other candidates, the source told Rappler that his youth and fresh mindset make him an attractive choice for the Blazers coaching post.

Tang, who won championships as a player with La Salle in the UAAP and Rain or Shine in the PBA, will be given time to develop along with the Blazers’ young core if he is chosen for the job, according to the source. – Rappler.com
